On 23 July 2019, the Senate referred an inquiry into press freedom to the Environment and Communications References Committee (the committee) for inquiry and report by 19 December 2019. On 14 October 2019 the Senate granted an extension of time to report to 16 March 2020.

The committee requests an extension of time to report until 20 May 2020 to allow it to take further evidence, consider the evidence already received and to conclude its deliberations.
