Competition and Consumer Amendment (Prevention of Exploitation of Indigenous Cultural Expressions) Bill 2019

On 4 July 2019, the Senate referred the Competition and Consumer Amendment (Prevention of Exploitation of Indigenous Cultural Expressions) Bill 2019 to the Environment and Communications Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by 5 December 2019.

On 25 November 2019, the Senate granted the committee an extension of time to report to 26 March 2020.

On 26 March 2020, the reporting date was extended to 16 April 2020.

The closing date for submissions to the inquiry is 14 August 2019.

About this inquiry

The Bill would amend the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 to make it an offence to supply or offer commercial goods to a consumer that include Indigenous cultural expression unless supplied by, or in accordance with a transparent arrangement with, an Indigenous artist or relevant Indigenous community.
