Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Amendment (Save the Koala) Bill 2021

The Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Amendment (Save the Koala) Bill 2021 seeks to amend parts of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) to introduce a moratorium on the clearing of koala habitat. It would prevent the Minister from approving an action under the EPBC Act where that action consists of or involves the clearing of koala habitat, as well as remove the exemption of Regional Forest Agreements from requirements of the EPBC Act where there is, may, or is likely to be a significant impact on koalas.

The closing date for submissions is 8 April 2021.

On 22 November 2021, the reporting date was extended to 16 February 2022.

On 11 February 2022, the committee presented a progress report recommending that the Senate grant an extension of time to report until 16 May 2022.

On 10 May 2022, the committee presented a progress report recommending that the Senate grant an extension of time to report until 2 August 2022.
