On 18 June 2015, the Senate referred an inquiry into the threat of marine plastic pollution in Australia and Australian waters to the Environment and Communications References Committee. The committee is to report by 18 April 2016.

The committee requests an extension of time to report until 20 April 2016 to allow it to consider the evidence received and to conclude its deliberations.
