Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Amendment (Standards and Assurance) Bill 2021

The Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Amendment (Standards and Assurance) Bill 2021 would establish a framework for National Environmental Standards to underpin bilateral agreements between the Commonwealth and states and territories. It would also establish an Environment Assurance Commissioner to monitor and audit the operation of bilateral agreements, as well as to oversee Commonwealth processes under the Act for making and enforcing approval decisions.

The closing date for submissions is 25 March 2021.

About this inquiry

On 25 February 2021, the Senate referred the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Amendment (Standards and Assurance) Bill 2021 to the Senate Environment and Communications Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by 1 June 2021.

On 26 May 2021, the Committee presented a progress report recommending that the Senate grant an extension of time to report until 8 June 2021.
