About Time! Women in sport and recreation in Australia
Tabled Today: 6 September 2006
After 4.30 p.m.
Senator Andrew Bartlett, Chair of the Senate Environment, Communications, Information Technology and the Arts References Committee, will table the Committee's report intoWomen in sport and recreation in Australia today 6 September 2006 after 4.30 p.m.
This unanimous report highlights the benefits to women and girls of participating in sport and recreation but also draws attention to the high attrition rates in female participation in sport and recreation activities. The Committee makes 18 recommendations which address the need for more support for women's sport and recreation in Australia .
The report is critical of some sections of the media for the role it plays in neglecting women's sporting achievements. The Committee makes a number of recommendations which seek better engagement between the media and women's sporting organisations.
