On 26 October 2010 the Senate referred the Water (Crisis Powers and Floodwater Diversion) Bill 2010 for inquiry and report.
This Bill was previously referred to the former Environment, Communications and the Arts Committee with a report date of 24 August 2010. However, on 19 July 2010, the Governor General prorogued the 42nd Parliament and the Committee was not able to conclude its inquiry.
In conducting the current inquiry the Committee is authorised to use the written and oral records of the earlier inquiry.
