Inquiry into the provisions of the Surveillance Devices Bill 2004
The Surveillance Devices Bill 2004 has been referred to the Legal and
Constitutional Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by 27 May
2004.
The bill seeks to consolidate and update the regulation of the use of
surveillance devices by the Commonwealth and state or territory enforcement
agencies. Such devices include data surveillance, optical surveillance
or tracking devices in addition to the listening devices already in use.
The bill proposes the widening of both the range of offences for which
surveillance devices may be used as part of the investigation, and the
type of devices that may be used. Terms of Reference

called for by 23 April 2004. Submissions become Committee
documents and are only made public after a decision by the Committee.
