Migration Amendment (Prohibiting Items in Immigration Detention Facilities) Bill 2020 [Provisions]

On 14 May 2020 the Senate referred the provisions of the Migration Amendment (Prohibiting Items in Immigration Detention Facilities) Bill 2020 to the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by 5 August 2020.

The deadline for submissions to the inquiry is 11 June 2020.

About this inquiry

The bill amends the Migration Act 1958 to allow the Minister to classify things, such as drugs and mobile phones, as ‘prohibited’ in relation to immigration detention facilities and detainees. The bill also includes a new statutory search power.
