Information about the inquiry
On 14 October 2008, the Senate referred the
Migration Legislation Amendment (Worker Protection) Bill 2008 to the
Legislation and Constitutional Affairs Committee for inquiry and report.
The bill will amend the Migration Act 1958 to
change the framework for the sponsorship of non-citizens seeking entry to
Australia through four main measures:
- providing a new structure to define sponsorship
obligations for employers;
- changing information sharing across government;
- expanding powers to monitor and investigate
possible non-compliance by sponsors; and
- introducing new penalties for sponsors found in
breach of their obligations.
The reporting date for this inquiry is 7 November
2008.
The Committee invites written submissions by
Monday 27 October 2008.
