Information about the Inquiry

On 04 February 2010 the Senate referred the Criminal Code Amendment (Misrepresentation of Age to a Minor) Bill 2010 for inquiry and report.

This bill is a private senator's bill introduced by Senator Xenophon.   The bill amends the Criminal Code Act 1995 to make it a criminal offence for a person over 18 years of age to intentionally misrepresent their age in communications with a person they reasonably believe to be under 18 years of age. The bill is intended to protect people under the age of 18 years from internet predators who intentionally misrepresent their age so as to gain the trust of minors.

Submissions should be received by 19 February 2010. The reporting date is 30 June 2010.

The Committee is seeking written submissions from interested individuals and organisations preferably in electronic form submitted online or sent by email to legcon.sen@aph.gov.au as an attached Adobe PDF or MS Word format document. The email must include full postal address and contact details.
