INQUIRY INTO MARRIAGE EQUALITY AMENDMENT BILL 2010

INTERIM REPORT

Pursuant to Senate Standing Order 38(7), I present to you an interim report of the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee (committee) in relation to the Marriage Equality Amendment Bill 2010 (Bill).

On 8 February 2012, the Senate referred the Bill to the committee for inquiry and report by 25 May 2012. The reporting date was subsequently extended to 6 June 2012.

The committee has received over 75,000 submissions for this inquiry and has held two public hearings in Sydney and Melbourne. Due to the large volume of evidence received, and the need to thoroughly consider that evidence and conclude its deliberations, the committee intends to table its final report by 25 June 2012.

Senator Trish Crossin
Chair
