On 19 September 2019, the Senate referred an inquiry into Australia’s sovereign naval shipbuilding capability to the Senate Economics References Committee for inquiry and report by the 3 December 2020.

On Thursday, 12 November 2020, pursuant to the temporary order agreed on 23 March 2020, the Senate Economics References Committee agreed that the time for presentation of the report of the inquiry into Australia's sovereign naval shipbuilding capability be extended from 3 December 2020 to 30 June 2021. On 11 May 2021, the Senate granted the committee an extension to report by 2 December 2021. 
On 24 November 2021, the Senate granted the committee a further extension to report by 1 June 2022.
