On 30 May 2017 the Government introduced into the House of Representatives, the Major Bank Levy Bill 2017 and the Treasury Laws Amendment (Major Bank Levy) Bill 2017 as part of the 2017-18 Budget package. 

On 13 June 2017, the Senate referred the provisions of the Major Bank Levy Bill 2017 and the Treasury Laws Amendment (Major Bank Levy) Bill 2017 to the Economics Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by Monday, 19 June 2017.
