Inquiry into the Tax Laws Amendment (Confidentiality of Taxpayer Information) Bill 2009

Information about the Inquiry

On 26 November 2009 the Senate referred the Tax Laws Amendment (Confidentiality of Taxpayer Information) Bill 2009 for inquiry and report.

The bill amends the secrecy and disclosure provisions applying to taxation information that are currently spread over many taxation law Acts. The bill consolidates and standardises these various enactments into a single new framework in Schedule 1 to the Taxation Administration Act 1953. The new framework is designed to provide clarity and certainty to taxpayers, the Australian Taxation Office and users of taxpayer information and to provide guiding principles to assist in framing any future additions.

Submissions should be received by 18 December 2009. The reporting date is 25 February 2010. On 23 February 2010,the Senate granted an extension of time for reporting until 11 March 2010.
