Inquiry into the provisions of the Petroleum Retail Legislation Repeal Bill 2006

On 30 March 2006, the Senate referred the provisions of the Petroleum Retail Legislation Repeal Bill 2006  to the Economics Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by 11 May 2006.

The bill will repeal the Petroleum Retail Sites Marketing Act 1980, which restricts the number of retail sites the oil majors can directly own and operate in Australia; and also the Petroleum Retail Marketing Franchise Act 1980, which sets the minimum terms and conditions for franchise agreements between the oil majors and their franchisees. The repeal of these Acts is part of the government's Downstream Petroleum Reform Package, which will concurrently mandate an "oilcode" under Section 51AE of the Trade Practices Act. Written submissions are invited and should be sent to:

The Secretary,
Senate Economics Legislation Committee,
Suite SG.64, Parliament House
Canberra ACT 2600.

The closing date for submissions is 13 April 2006.

The Committee requests that where possible, submissions should also be provided by email to economics.sen@aph.gov.au, preferably as MS Word 97 or RTF format documents.
