Pursuant to standing order 38(7), I present an interim report on the provisions of the Petroleum Retail Legislation Repeal Bill 2006.
The Senate referred this bill to the Committee on 30 March 2006, for report on 2 May 2006. The Committee advertised the inquiry and received 8 submissions. A public hearing was conducted on the bill in Sydney on 19 April 2006.
In the time available at the public hearing in Sydney, the Committee was unable to deal with evidence from officers of the Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources. Before finalising consideration of the bill and presenting a final report to the Senate, the Committee wishes to hear evidence from those officers. It proposes to take this evidence at a further public hearing, which has been scheduled for 8 May 2006, in Canberra.
The Committee has also sought comment on the evidence received thus far from the ACCC, who will be responsible for administering the proposed oilcode regulations, an integral part of the reform package. The Committee anticipates receiving a response from the ACCC by 4 May 2006.
The Committee intends to table its final report to the Senate on the bill on 11 May 2006.
