Pursuant to standing order 38(7), I present an interim report on the provisions of the Fuel Tax Bill 2006 and the Fuel Tax (Consequential and Transitional Provisions) Bill 2006.

The Senate referred these bills to the Committee on 11 May 2006, for report on 7 June 2006. The Committee advertised the inquiry and received 35 submissions. A public hearing was conducted on the bills in Canberra on 5 June 2006.

During the hearing on 5 June 2006, Treasury officers undertook to provide further evidence in writing by close of business 6 June 2006. Before finalising consideration of the bills and presenting a final report to the Senate, the Committee wishes to have the opportunity to consider this evidence.

The Committee intends to table its final report to the Senate on the bills on 13 June 2006.

Senator George Brandis
Chair
