On 5 October 2005 , the Senate referred the provisions of the Energy Efficiency Opportunities Bill 2005 to the Economics Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by 7 November 2005.
This bill establishes the Energy Efficiency Opportunities Program. Previous State Government energy efficiency programs have shown that a significant number of cost effective energy efficiency improvements have been overlooked by businesses. The aim of this program is to stimulate the business sector to take a more rigorous approach to energy management.
Under the program, large energy users (those who consume more than 0.5 petajoules per year, approximately equivalent to the energy used by 10 000 households) will be required to assess the potential to improve their efficiency of energy use and report publicly on their findings.
