Background to and conduct of the inquiry
1.1 The Financial Sector (Transfers of Business) Bill 1999, Financial
Sector Reform (Amendments and Transitional Provisions) Bill (No. 1) 1999
and Income Tax Rates Amendment (RSAs Provided by Registered Organizations)
Bill 1999 were referred to this Committee by the Senate on 31 March 199,
as a result of a report by the Selection of Bills Committee. The Senate
set 13 May 1999 as the date for the tabling of the Committee's report.
1.2 The committee secretariat contacted all interested parties nominated
in the Selection of Bills Committee's report and advised them of the inquiry.
The inquiry was also posted on the Internet. As a result, the Committee
received 5 written submissions.
1.3 The Committee conducted a public hearing on the bills in Canberra
on 29 April 1999. A list of witnesses who gave evidence at the hearing
appears in Appendix 1, and the full transcript of the hearing is available
on the internet at .
1.4 The Committee thanks those who made submissions and gave evidence
to the inquiry.
