Review of ASIO's questioning and detention powers

On 15 February 2017, the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security commenced a review of the operation, effectiveness and implications of Division 3 of Part III of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation Act 1979.

Division 3 provides for special powers relating to terrorism offences, including questioning warrants and questioning and detention warrants.

Under paragraph 29(1)(bb) of the Intelligence Services Act 2001, the Committee is required to complete its review by 7 March 2018.

On 1 March 2018, Mr Andrew Hastie MP, Chair of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security, made a statement in the House of Representatives advising the Parliament that the Committee had completed its review. 

The Committee tabled its report on 10 May 2018.
