A clinical trial usually involves a double-blind study of the efficacy of
a treatment or medication, which would not be appropriate in the context of
mitochondrial donation. Notwithstanding this, the term clinical trial is useful
for a layperson to conceptualise the limitations that would be placed on
accessing mitochondrial donation if introduced in a controlled manner to
Australian clinical practice. An appropriate description would be an
observational clinical trial.
