Provisions of the Maritime Transport and Offshore Facilities Security Amendment (Security Plans and Other Measures) Bill 2006

Information about the Inquiry

On 11 May 2006, the Senate referred the provisions of the above bill to the Senate Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by 15 June 2006.

The bill proposes amendments to the Maritime Transport and Offshore Facilities Security Act 2003 to simplify the procedures for making changes to maritime, ship and offshore facilities security plans; clarify measures relating to the plan approval processes and make technical amendments to clarify the intent of the Act.

The Committee's inquiry will examine the effectiveness of the bill in enhancing security against terrorism and providing a better forum for community and industry feedback on security issues.

The Bill, and the Second Reading Speeches may be accessed on ParlInfo Web.

The Committee invites written submissions on the Bill. Due to the short timeframe for this inquiry the submission should be lodged with the Committee as soon as possible. The Committee prefers to receive submissions electronically as an attached document - email: rrat.sen@aph.gov.au – otherwise by fax (number 02 6277 5811).

The Committee intends to hold a public hearing on the Bill at Parliament House, Canberra on Friday, 26 May 2006.
