Appendix 3Site inspections in Tom Price and Karratha, Western Australia
In association with its public hearing in Tom Price on Wednesday 13March2024, sub-committees appointed by the Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee conducted a series of site inspections in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The purpose of these visits was to better understand the importance of local industry to the regional and national economy in the context of local bank branch closures.
Rio Tinto Iron Ore, Tom Price—13 March 2024
Following the public hearing in Tom Price on Wednesday 13 March 2024, sub‑committee members—Senator the Hon Matthew Canavan (Chair), SenatortheHon Richard Colbeck and Senator Slade Brockman—conducted a site inspection of the Rio Tinto Iron Ore Mine. Committee members were welcomed and accompanied by Mr Chris Osborn, Tom Price General Manager. Committee members were given a site briefing followed by a tour of the pit and plant. On behalf of the sub-committee, the Chair thanked MrOsborn and other Rio Tinto employees for hosting the committee.
Karratha site inspections—14 March 2024
On Thursday 14 March 2024, sub-committee members—SenatortheHonMatthew Canavan (Chair) and Senator the Hon Richard Colbeck—conducted a series of site inspections in the Karratha area including:
Ngajarli Gorge
Yara Pilbara
Karratha Gas Plant
Pilbara Ports Tour
The day concluded with a brief excursion exploring Karratha and its nearby landmarks, observing local businesses and infrastructure. The committee extends its thanks to the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia for assisting with arrangements for the day.
