INTERIM REPORT

Inquiry into Planning Options and Services for People Ageing with a Disability

Pursuant to Senate Standing Order 38(7), I present to you an interim report of the Senate Community Affairs References Committee on Planning Options and Services for People Ageing with a Disability.

On 30 September 2010, the Senate referred this matter to the Committee for inquiry and report on 31 March 2011. On 1 March 2011, the Senate granted an extension of time for reporting until 18 April 2011. The terms of references are as follows:

Access to options for and services to assist people with a disability and their carers to plan for the future, including:

  1. Inadequacies in the choice and funding of planning options currently available to people ageing with a disability and their carers;
  2. Ways to ensure the continued quality of life for people with a disability as they and their carers age;
  3. The types of options and services that could be developed to help people with a disability and their carers to plan for the future; and
  4. Any other matters which would assist carers to find an adequate and appropriate answer to the question: 'What happens when I / we can no longer care?'

There has been considerable interest in this inquiry. The committee has held five public hearings and received substantial amounts of evidence in relation to the terms of reference. In order to give proper consideration to this evidence, the committee has agreed to present this interim report and intends to table its final report by 31 May 2011.
