Fiscal projections and sustainability

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on Australia's debt position.

The PBO’s fiscal projections and sustainability work helps to inform the public debate about the drivers of key budget outcomes over the next decade and fiscal sustainability over the next 40 years.

The interactive fiscal sustainability dashboard provides trajectories for gross debt using selected scenarios of key variables. The framework underpinning the dashboard was introduced in the Fiscal sustainability report, which examines the sustainability of the government’s fiscal position over the next 40 years.

The regular Beyond the budget report provides independent projections of key budget outcomes such as debt and the budget balance over the next decade and regular updates to the longer-term fiscal scenarios analysis in the Fiscal sustainability report. The Beyond the budget report was previously known as the Medium-term fiscal projections report.
