Budget Estimates 2017-18

1.1
On 9 May 2017 the Senate referred to following to the Senate Finance and
Public Administration Legislation Committee (the committee) for examination and
report:
-
Particulars of proposed expenditure in respect of the year ending
on 30 June 2018;
-
Particulars of certain proposed expenditure in respect of the
year ending on 30 June 2018; and
-
Particulars of proposed expenditure in relation to the
parliamentary departments in respect of the year ending on 30 June 2018.[1]
Portfolio coverage and hearings
1.2
The committee has responsibility for examining the expenditure and
outcomes of the following:
-
Parliament;[2]
-
Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C) Portfolio;
-
Finance Portfolio;[3]
and
-
Cross Portfolio Indigenous Matters.
Portfolio Budget Statements 2017-18

The Portfolio Budget Statements (PBS) 2017-18 for the PM&C Portfolio,
the Finance Portfolio and the Parliamentary departments were tabled in the
Senate on 9 May 2017.[4]
Hearings
1.4
The committee held public hearings from 22 to 26 May 2017. The
parliamentary departments were examined on 22 May, the PM&C Portfolio
(excluding Indigenous matters) was examined on 22 and 23 May, the Finance
Portfolio was examined on 24 and 25 May, and the Cross Portfolio Indigenous
Matters hearing was held on 26 May 2017.

The committee took evidence from the President of the Senate, Senator
the Hon Stephen Parry, and the following Ministers accompanied by officers of
relevant departments and agencies:

the Prime Minister;

Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash, Minister for Employment, Minister
for Women, and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Public Service;

Senator the Hon Mathias Cormann, Minister for Finance;

Senator the Hon Scott Ryan, Special Minister of State; and

The committee expresses its appreciation for the assistance of the
President, Ministers and the officers who appeared.
