On 17 March 2021, the Senate referred opportunities for advancing Australia’s strategic interests through existing regional architecture to the Senate Foreign Affairs Defence and Trade References Committee (Committee) for inquiry and report. Submissions were sought by 7 May 2021 and the committee was due to report on 5 August 2021.

On 21 June 2021 the reporting date was extended to 2 September 2021.

On 23 August 2021 the reporting date was extended to 30 September 2021.

The Committee has received 13 submissions and held two public hearings in Canberra on 19 August and 24 August 2021.

The Committee is seeking an extension to the reporting date to 7 October 2021 to enable it to conclude its deliberations.
