Role of the Committee

The PJCPS is a statutory committee appointed under section 59B of the Parliamentary Workplace Support Service Act 2023. Under Part 6A of the Act, the Joint Committee’s role is to consider proposed recommendations for the appointment of Commissioners to the Independent Parliamentary Standards Commission (IPSC), review the operation and effectiveness of each Behaviour Code, monitor and review the performance by the Commissioners of their functions, and report to both Houses of Parliament on any matter connected with the performance of the IPSC or the Commissioners.

As outlined in section 59G of the Parliamentary Workplace Support Service Act 2023, the committee is not authorised to direct the activities of the IPSC, investigate a conduct issue, or give or seek advice in relation to a particular person or conduct issue.

A resolution relating to the powers and procedures of the committee was passed by the House of Representatives on 9 October 2024, and by the Senate on 10 October 2024.
