Dear Mr Speaker and Mr President
On 7 December 2017 the Joint Standing Committee on the National Broadband Network (NBN) agreed to conduct an inquiry into two discrete aspects of the rollout of the NBN:
- the rollout of the NBN in regional and rural Australia; and
- nbn co's business case.
Submissions on both issues were sought by 29 March 2018. The committee is due to report to Parliament on the rollout of the NBN in regional and rural Australia in September 2018, and in September or October 2018 for the business case.
The committee received 22 submissions in relation to the rollout of the NBN to regional and rural Australia, and 8 submissions for the nbn co's business case. There have been four public hearings: Sydney on 4 June 2018; Melbourne on 5 June 2018 in Melbourne; Brisbane on 14 June 2018; and Canberra on 15 August 2018.
The committee's establishment resolutions require the committee to report annually to each House of the Parliament. The committee tabled its first report on 29 September 2017.
While the committee intended to table a second report, on the rollout of the NBN in regional and rural Australia, in September 2018, it requires further time to deliberate on the report. The committee intends to table its second report on Monday 22 October 2018 and provides this progress report in the interim.
Yours sincerely
Hon Jane Prentice MP
