The House Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Resources today tabled its report Sovereign, smart, sustainable: Driving advanced manufacturing in Australia. The Chair of the Committee, Mr Rob Mitchell MP, said “manufacturing has been in decline in this country since the sixties. Now is the time to turn that around and set Australia on a course to becoming globally competitive in advanced manufacturing.” Mr Mitchell went on to say that “the notion that Australian-made products cannot compete with foreign alternatives is now outdated. With advanced manufacturing processes and techniques, particularly Industry 4.0 technologies, Australian manufacturing can be globally competitive—including on cost. “We heard that Australian manufacturers are already succeeding in global markets in high value-added niches, where they can compete on R&D, quality, safety and trust rather than being two cents cheaper than the competition.” The bipartisan report makes 10 recommendations designed to support manufacturers’ access to suitable investment capital, improve R&D commercialisation and industry–research collaboration, and address workforce and skills shortages. Recommendations include creating a National Advanced Manufacturing Commissioner, establishing government-owned common user facilities in innovation precincts, and scaling up successful Industry 4.0 capability development programs for small and medium-sized businesses—the majority of Australian manufacturers. Health, robotics and space are three sectors to be examined tomorrow by the House Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Resources as part of its inquiry into developing advanced manufacturing in Australia. Stakeholders will share their views on key issues affecting the growth of advanced manufacturing development in Australia relating to health, robotics and space. Representatives from the different sectors will discuss what is needed to enable the growth of advanced manufacturing, financial and non-financial investment opportunities and their worker and skills needs. ‘‘The Committee looks forward to hearing stakeholders’ insights into how the Commonwealth Government can better support the growth of advanced manufacturing in Australia. The growth of advanced manufacturing is vital to our future industry and any changes that we recommend must be informed by industry’’, said Committee Chair, Mr Rob Mitchell MP. Renewable energy technology is one of the sectors that will be examined by the House Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Resources in its inquiry into developing advanced manufacturing in Australia. The Committee will hear ideas from stakeholder organisations on how best to develop Australia’s advanced manufacturing capability. Representatives from the health, unions, resource manufacturing, and energy sectors will explore the current advanced manufacturing landscape in Australia, the opportunities and challenges affecting the sector. The House Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Resources has launched an inquiry into advanced manufacturing, with the aim of further supporting Australian industry, creating jobs and reviving our ability to make world class products here in Australia. Committee Chair Rob Mitchell MP said understanding opportunities associated with advanced manufacturing is crucial for strategic growth. ‘Supporting the growth of advanced manufacturing is about enhancing the things we do well by taking advantage of new and improved processes,’ Mr Mitchell MP said. ‘We need to ensure that we are well-positioned as a nation to take advantage of new technologies, and that our strategic decisions are informed by the right data.
