As part of its inquiry into the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water will travel to Adelaide to hear from representatives from SA Power Networks, government departments, academics and Mitsubishi Motors about Australia’s transition to electric vehicles. The Committee will hold a half day of public hearings before attending a site visit to the Motor Trades Association (MTA). MTA Training and Employment is a leader in automotive and electrical vehicle training, training over 1,000 apprentices, as well as skilled technicians and workers in automotive, mining and emergency services sectors. Chair of the Committee, Mr Tony Zappia MP, said ‘the Committee looks forward to hearing from representatives from SA Power Networks about the current and future demands on the South Australian electricity grid with the increasing uptake of electric vehicles. SA Power Networks will discuss how it is managing the latest technology of vehicle-to-grid EV charging, which allows EVs to feed electricity back into the grid when demand is high. Mitsubishi Motors Australia will discuss its current market demand for hybrids and EVs and the Committee will examine potential challenges for supplying electric vehicles to Australia’s right-hand driving market now and into the future.’ ‘The site visit to the Motor Trade Association will give the Committee an important overview about the training and employment sector for electric vehicles. As part of its inquiry into the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water will travel to Brisbane to hear from representatives of the Queensland Government, the heavy vehicle industry, EV manufacturers and experts in battery technologies. The Committee will hold a half day of public hearings before conducting a site visit to Queensland Energy Storage Technology (QUEST) Hub, a facility enabling the research, development and commercialisation of battery materials, cells and systems. On Friday 6th September, the Committee will conduct a second site visit to Lava Blue Ltd’s Centre for Predictive Research into Specialty Materials (PRiSM), where researchers are developing processes for manufacturing battery-grade materials. Chair of the Committee, Mr Tony Zappia MP, said ‘the Committee is eager to hear from the Queensland Government about its Electric Super Highway that is connecting commuters and tourists with fast charging infrastructure for electric vehicles along the coastline and into regional and rural Queensland. The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water will be travelling to Melbourne this week as part of its inquiry into the transition to electric vehicles (EVs). The Committee will undertake two site visits in Melbourne; the first to Infinitev, a business that is reusing, repurposing and recycling hybrid and EV batteries, and the second to an ANCAP Safety test facility where the Committee will view an EV or hybrid model crash test. A full day public hearing will be held on Thursday 8 August where the Committee will hear from industry stakeholders, including representatives from health and environmental groups, the petroleum and motor industries, and emergency services about Australia’s transition to EVs. The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water has commenced an inquiry into the transition to electric vehicles (EVs). Chair of the Committee, Mr Tony Zappia MP, said ‘Australian motorists are increasingly choosing EVs when purchasing a new car. The percentage of EVs sold is growing every year, moving to 7.2 per cent of all new cars sold in 2023 up from less than 3 per cent in 2022. The inquiry will consider the necessary resources, systems and infrastructure for this transition and the impacts of moving away from traditional vehicles.’ ‘The Committee will also explore opportunities such as fuel savings and affordability for residents in outer regions to make this shift beneficial for everyone. Our focus will also be on the future of EV battery manufacturing, and we will consider challenges on electricity consumption and demand and our limited EV supply compared to other countries,’ Mr Zappia said. The Committee is seeking written submissions providing recommendations relating to any or all of the below inquiry terms of reference by Friday, 22 March 2024. The Committee will examine: the establishment of resources, systems and infrastructure required to support transition to EVs the impact of moving from internal combustion engine vehicles, including fuel excise loss, existing auto industry component manufacturers and the environment the opportunities for fuel savings, such as by combining EVs with other consumer energy technologies and savings for outer suburban and regional motorists the impact on electricity consumption and demand the opportunities for expanding EV battery manufacturing, recycling, disposal and safety, and other opportunities for Australia in the automotive value chain to support the ongoing maintenance of EVs the impact of Australia’s limited EV supply compared to peer countries, and any other relevant matters.
