Your first speech is a great way to speak about issues you are passionate about. You could enter as an individual or get your whole school involved!
Australian students enrolled in years 10 to 12 are invited to enter the 'My First Speech' competition.
Imagine yourself as a newly elected Member of the House of Representatives. Your task is to write a 90-second speech about issues you are passionate about then record yourself presenting the speech on video.
The video should be in MP4 format with a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels (or above) and no longer than 90 seconds in length. Opening titles or end credits are not required.
A winner from each year group (10, 11 and 12) will be invited to Canberra to deliver their speeches live and undertake a program of meetings at Parliament House.
This year all entries will be collected through an online form where you will fill in your details, paste your transcript and upload your video.
If you're under 18, a parent or guardian will need to fill and sign the Consent and Release Agreement part of the entry form.
Here is a few things you need to know or have ready before entering:
-
You will be asked to nominate the electorate you are entering from. If you don’t know your electorate you can look up your address on the AEC Website. We want to know the electorate of your home rather than your school.
-
You will be asked to paste the transcript (text version) of your speech. This can be copy and pasted from MS Word, Pages or other text editing application.
-
You will need to upload a copy of your video in MP4 (H264 codec) format and it will need to be under 500mb in size. If you need to change the file type and or size of your video, you can use free video compression software like Free Convert, Handbrake or any other video compression tool. Please make sure you understand the terms and conditions of these tools before using them.
Entries have now closed for the 2024 competition.
