On 24 June 2014, the Senate referred the Medical Services (Dying with Dignity) Exposure Draft Bill 2014 to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by 27 October 2014. In referring the exposure draft of the Bill, the Senate requested that the committee have regard to the rights of terminally ill people to seek assistance in ending their lives, and an appropriate framework and safeguards with which to do so.

The committee is still deliberating. The committee proposes to present its final report on 10 November 2014.

Recommendation 1

That the committee present its final report on 10 November 2014.
