Inquiry into the Defence Legislation Amendment (Security of Defence Premises) Bill 2010
Background
The Defence Legislation Amendment (Security of Defence Premises) Bill 2010 was introduced into the Senate on 24 June 2010. On the same day, the Senate referred the Bill to the Senate Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Legislation Committee for inquiry and report. The committee was to report by 24 August 2010.
Purpose of the Bill
The proposed legislation sought to enhance the security of Defence bases, facilities, assets, and personnel within Australia in response to the changing nature of security threats.
Conduct of the inquiry
The committee advertised the inquiry in the Australian on30 June, 14 July and 11 August.It wrote to relevant ministers and departments and to all state premiers calling for written submissions. The committee also contacted a number of other organisations, commentators and academics inviting them to make submissions to the inquiry. The committee has received two submissions.
On 19 July 2010, the Governor-General prorogued the 42nd Parliament and dissolved the House of Representatives. After due consideration, the committee has resolved not to continue its inquiry into the provisions of the Bill. If the Bill is reintroduced in the new parliament, the Senate may again refer it to the committee for inquiry.
