PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE TO HOLD PUBLIC HEARING INTO
GOVERNMENT LEGISLATION TO ENHANCE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE NATIONAL CRIME
AUTHORITY
Chairman of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on the National Crime Authority,
Mr Peter Nugent MP, announced today details of the Committee's public
hearing into the National Crime Authority Legislation Amendment Bill
2000. The Bill essentially amends the National Crime Authority
Act 1984 and the Ombudsman Act 1976 to improve the operational
effectiveness and efficiency of the National Crime Authority.
Mr Nugent said today:
On 7 December 2000 the Senate directed the Committee to examine
the Bill and to report back by 1 March 2001. Following national advertising
for interested individuals and agencies to place submissions before
the Committee for its consideration, some 23 have been received from
a wide range of sources.
Tomorrow's hearing will provide an opportunity for the Government's
representatives to explain the Bill's provisions and for a representative
group of witnesses to provide commentary on the appropriateness of
the provisions.
Details of the hearing are shown overleaf. The hearing will consist of
a series of panel discussions, during which panel members will be invited
to comment on evidence given by other witnesses, as well as responding
to requests for advice from Committee members.
Copies of submissions are available from the secretariat or via the Committee's
home page of www.aph.gov.au/nca.
