PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE TO HOLD PUBLIC HEARING INTO THE LAW ENFORCEMENT
IMPLICATIONS OF NEW TECHNOLOGY
Chairman of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on the National Crime Authority,
Mr Peter Nugent MP, announced today details of a public hearing to be
held in Canberra next Monday into the law enforcement implications of
new technology.
Mr Nugent said:
Next week's hearing will be the Committee's fourth in its program
of hearings into the law enforcement implications of new technology.
The Committee has already heard evidence from the NCA itself,
senior representatives of the Attorney-General's portfolio, expert
criminologists and the private sector about the many challenges that
new technology holds for the future of Australian law enforcement.
The hearing on Monday is the Committee's first to be held exclusively
with non-Canberra based witnesses and it is hoped that it will provide
Committee members with an appreciation of the national scale of the
challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for law enforcement in
the new millennium.
Details of the public hearing are given overleaf. The public and the
media are welcome to attend and to observe the proceedings. Copies of
submissions to the Committee's inquiry can be obtained from the secretariat
or at www.aph.gov.au/nca. The Committee's terms of reference are as follows:
-
- whether use of new technology by law enforcement agencies is adequately
catered for by Commonwealth, State and Territory legislation;
- the extent to which electronic commerce facilitates the laundering
of the proceeds of crime; and
- whether international law enforcement cooperation is adequate
to meet the challenges of new technology.
