PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE TO HOLD PUBLIC HEARING INTO THE LAW ENFORCEMENT IMPLICATIONS OF NEW TECHNOLOGY

Chairman of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on the National Crime Authority, Mr Peter Nugent MP, announced today details of a public hearing to be held in Canberra next Monday into the law enforcement implications of new technology.

Mr Nugent said:

Details of the public hearing are given overleaf. The public and the media are welcome to attend and to observe the proceedings. Copies of submissions to the Committee's inquiry can be obtained from the secretariat or at www.aph.gov.au/nca. The Committee's terms of reference are as follows:

    1. whether use of new technology by law enforcement agencies is adequately catered for by Commonwealth, State and Territory legislation;
    2. the extent to which electronic commerce facilitates the laundering of the proceeds of crime; and
    3. whether international law enforcement cooperation is adequate to meet the challenges of new technology.
