Inquiry into the future impact of serious and organised crime on Australian society

Media Release: Public hearing in Melbourne 01/05/07

The Parliamentary Joint Committee on the Australian Crime Commission will conduct the second hearing of its inquiry into the future impact of serious and organised crime on Tuesday 1 May 2007 in Melbourne at the Victorian Parliament meeting rooms on Level 8, 35 Spring Street.

The Committee chair, Senator the Hon. Ian Macdonald, said today that the Committee had received a number of submissions and was looking forward to hearing from a diverse range of witnesses: 'This inquiry is not only about legislative and administrative solutions but also an assessment of the social effects of serious and organised crime'.

Senator Macdonald continued, 'Organised crime has the potential to undermine the institutions at the foundation of our social and political structure. Our financial and legal systems could be seriously compromised if we do not now develop ways to mitigate the effects of organised crime'.

The Committee will hold further hearings over the next three months in Brisbane, Sydney and Canberra. The report is due later in the year.
