Inquiry into the collapse of Trio Capital and any other related matters

Information about the Inquiry

On 23 June 2011, the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Corporations and Financial Services initiated an inquiry into the following matter:

INQUIRY INTO THE COLLAPSE OF TRIO CAPITAL AND ANY OTHER RELATED MATTERS

The collapse of Trio Capital in December 2009 saw Australian investors lose more than $100 million. Many of those investors were retirees with large relative exposure to the fraudulent funds. Many who entered the funds did so following the advice of a relatively small group of financial planners.

Under the terms of the recently announced $55 million grant to victims of the Trio collapse, compensation will be limited to those investors who had invested in Trio Capital through an APRA regulated fund. The compensation arrangements do not extend to do-it-yourself investors.

Submissions should be received by 19 August 2011. The reporting date is 24 November 2011.

On 24 November the committee took the decision to present an interim report to parliament and to extend the reporting date to 9 May 2012. On 7 May 2012 the committee resolved that the report would   be tabled on 16 May 2012.
