MPs TO GIVE EVIDENCE TO ELECTION INQUIRY
The Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters will hear a range
of views from Members of Parliament at a public hearing in 11 May as part
of the 1998 federal election inquiry.
'The inquiry has reached a stage where the Committee is now collecting
information from witnesses about specific aspects of the electoral process,'
Committee Chair Mr Gary Nairn, Member for Eden - Monaro, said. 'I expect
a number of productive suggestions will come from the hearing, particularly
in relation to the security of the electoral roll and the process for
dealing with the death of a candidate.'
Appearing before the Committee will be Mr Alan Morris MP, Member for
Newcastle and Mr Jim Lloyd MP, Member for Robertson.
'Parliamentarians have a keen interest in the welfare of the electoral
system, and have historically been significant contributors to federal
election inquiries,' Mr Nairn said.
'This inquiry is no exception, with a number of parliamentarians already
having provided submissions to the inquiry. I expect this hearing will
provide some productive suggestions on these and otters issues,' Mr Nairn
concluded.
