Reviews of the PBO

Independent reviews of the PBO seek to identify areas of improvements and suggest direction on how the PBO may evolve overtime so that we can continue to strengthen and build on our capability, culture and operations.

The Joint Committee of Public Accounts and Audit (JCPAA), the PBO's oversight committee, may request an independent review of the PBO to be conducted following a general election. Following the 2019 general election, the JCPAA resolved to inquire into the operations of the Parliamentary Budget Office. The JCPAA’s report was tabled on 19 October 2020.

There have been three other reviews to date, the first was conducted by the Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) following the 2013 general election. Following the ANAO review the JCPAA resolved to inquire into the operations of the PBO on 17 July 2014. The third was conducted by independent reviewers Dr Ian Watt AC and Barry Anderson following the 2016 general election.
