The construction of Parliament House

Glen O’Malley (born 1948), Untitled, 1985, Art/Craft Program, Parliament House Art Collection.

In 1980 architectural firm Mitchell/Giurgola & Thorp was announced as the winner of the international competition to design the building and construction began shortly after. The construction period would ultimately take eight years, with the contribution of more than 10,000 workers on the construction site. Twenty-four artists were invited by the Parliament House Construction authority, the agency responsible for the design and construction of Parliament House, to make submissions to be considered to produce a photographic record of the construction. All artists were commissioned, resulting in over 500 photographs produced that together form an important record of this architectural feat.
