Australian Greens' Dissenting Report

Australian Greens' Dissenting Report

1.1Australia has the highest rate of mammal extinction in the world. Habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation is the greatest threat to many Australian animals, including our iconic koala. Yet, Australia continues to give the tick of approval to projects that destroy the homes of critically endangered species.

1.2If decisive action is not taken to address increasing pressures on our environment, the koala and many other precious species will be pushed to the brink of extinction.

1.3Since the introduction of this bill, the Australian Government has set two key targets: to halt extinctions and protect 30 per cent of land and sea—both by 2030. The government cannot meet these targets if they continue allowing the destruction of habitat that our koalas call home.

1.4Without a moratorium on habitat clearing, koalas will be extinct in NSW by 2050. Our environment laws are failing to protect our wildlife.

1.5This bill must pass as a matter of urgency.
