Recent reports

Housing Assistances in Australia (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare)

This report summarises social housing in Australia and covers the number, location, and occupancy of dwellings; households; waiting lists; and entries, exits and transfers. In summary:

  • At June 2022, there were around 442,700 social housing dwellings, in 4 main housing programs:
    • 67.0% or 297,600 dwellings were public housing
    • 25.0% or 112,800 dwellings were community housing
    • 4.1% or 18,000 dwellings were Indigenous community housing
    • 3.2% or 14,300 dwellings were state owned and managed Indigenous housing.
  • The proportion of social housing households fell from 4.6% in 2014 to 4.1% in 2022.

Key characteristics of households in the three main social housing programs (excluding Indigenous community housing):

  • Over 6 in 10 (62%) of main tenants were female
  • 65% or 263,000 households of all main tenants were aged over 50 years
  • Around 1 in 6 (16% or 62,900) households included an Indigenous Australian
  • More than one third (36% or 145,300) included a person with a disability
  • Most households consisted of a single adult (58% or 231,100).

Dashboard: Social and Affordable Housing: Needs, Costs and Subsidy Gaps by Region (City Futures Research Centre, University of NSW)

The first phase of the social and affordable housing project draws on the recently released 2021 ABS Census of Population and Housing data to identify households in rental stress or facing homelessness. The second phase unpacks the costs of delivering the housing needed in these markets, and the subsidy needed to make such housing feasible.

According to the national snapshot:

  • Over half a million low-income households were not in appropriate housing on census night (around 1 in 15 households). These Australians were either experiencing homelessness, in overcrowded homes or spending over 30% of their income on rent.
  • Across most parts of Australia, the proportion of all households with unmet need is between 5% and 8%. Sydney, Brisbane and regional Queensland have comparatively high rates of unmet need while Perth, Adelaide and the ACT have comparatively lower rates.

Overseas Arrivals and Departures (Australian Bureau of Statistics)

The latest overseas arrivals and departures data for June 2023 has been released. Notably, these statistics are based on the number of international border crossings rather than the number of people.

Short-term visitor arrivals to Australia, 2022–23:

  • There were 5,856,440 visitor arrivals, nearly 5 times the previous year.
  • The most popular reasons for travel were 'visiting friends/relatives' (41%), ‘holidays’ (36%) and ‘business’ (7%).
  • The top 5 source countries were New Zealand (1,082,420 visits), the UK (573,560 visits), the USA (557,290), India (383,380) and Singapore (357,430). Ten years ago, in 2012–13, the top five source countries were New Zealand, China, the UK, the USA and Japan.
  • The median stay duration was 14 days, an increase from 10 days in 2018–19 (pre-pandemic). Visitors from China recorded a median stay duration of 90 days—the longest of the top 10 countries. This was down from 156 days the year before.
  • The median visitor age was 42 years, compared to 39 in 2012–13.
