Multiculturalism impresses visiting Sheikh

Tolerance appreciated by Iraq’s Foreign Affairs Committee Chair

The Chairman of the Iraq Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Sheikh Humam Baqir Hammoodi, has commented favourably on the strength of Australia’s multicultural society following a visit to Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Perth in May.

During the visit he met with members of ‘Together for Humanity’ a group that works with children, teaching them to replace prejudice with mutual respect and cooperation.

Sheikh Hammoodi said he was touched by the level of acceptance shown in Australia to people from different cultures and religions.

His visit also included meetings with academics, politicians and government officials, with whom he spoke about the rebuilding of Iraq and opportunities for further cooperation with Australia.
