Inquiry into the Migration Legislation Amendment (Identification and Authentication) Bill 2003

On 20 August 2003, the Senate referred the provisions of the Bill to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by 11 September 2003. The reporting has been extended to 18 September 2003.

The Senate Legal and Constitutional Committee is inquiring into the provisions of the Migration Legislation Amendment (Identification and Authentication) Bill 2003. The Bill provides a framework for collecting personal identifiers such as photographs, signatures, iris scans and fingerprints from specified non-citizens; allows reasonable force to be used in certain circumstances; and limits disclosure of such information.
