CHANCE FOR REGIONAL COMMUNITIES TO HAVE THEIR SAY ON REGIONAL BANKING WHEN COMMITTEE VISITS NORSEMAN AND LAVERTON

The influential House of Representatives Financial Institutions Committee will be visiting local businesses in Norseman followed by a public meeting in Laverton on Tuesday 14 July 1998. The visit is part of a wide-ranging inquiry into alternative banking for regional Australia being conducted by the Committee.

David Hawker MP, Chairman of the Committee, said, "The Committee is very interested in canvassing the views of people in regional Western Australia. In the course of the inquiry we have found a number of communities which have taken the initiative and have successfully sought out suitable alternatives to service their banking needs. The Committee will be visiting local businesses in Norseman and holding a public meeting in Laverton which will provide people in these communities with the opportunity to voice their concerns. We value community comments and suggestions. This helps build a complete picture of the situation in regional and remote areas."

"The Committee appreciates the assistance of the Goldfields-Esperance Development Commission in facilitating this visit. Through their extensive efforts the communities in the region will have an opportunity to have their concerns heard."

Mr Hawker added, "The Committee has so far been very successful in raising the profile of this important issue. The recent seven-point proposal put to the Committee by the Australian Banker's Association is evidence that the banks are now aware of just how important bank services are to regional and remote Australia. We are committed to finding the best possible solutions for people in rural and remote areas. Visiting regional areas allows the Committee to explore as many alternatives as possible."
