Inquiry into the Appropriate Roles of Institutes of Technical and
Further Education
The University of New South Wales is pleased to provide the following
comments in relation to the inquiry being conducted by the House of Representatives
Standing Committee on Employment, Education and Training.
These comments reinforce and reiterate aspects of the University's submission
to the Review of Higher Education Financing and Policy, a copy of which
is attached.
UNSW has argued that diversity throughout the higher education system
is in the national interest, and further diversity should be encouraged
through funding initiatives. A truly diverse higher education system will
avoid unnecessary duplication and involve universities concentrating on
areas of real distinctiveness. in such a system the roles of institutes
of technical and further education might overlap with some but not all
universities.
In some specialised areas there is a need for complementary provision
of education and training. The Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing and Hospitality
Management is one such degree offered by UNSW in which the academic content
of the course is complemented by an operational hospitality training component
conducted through institutes of technical and further education or approved
training colleges. Information about this degree program is enclosed.
In the context of there being some overlap of roles of institutes of
technical and further education with those of universities, UNSW would
be willing to explore all opportunities for sharing sites or specialist
facilities where this would advance the mission of the institutions involved.
Such action would be consistent with this University's commitment to a
diversified higher education sector and the role that UNSW has within
that sector as a research/teaching intensive university.
