OPAL is a 20 megawatt pool reactor using low enriched uranium fuel, and cooled by water. OPAL is a multipurpose facility for radioscopic production, irradiation services and neutron beam research. Its compact core is designed to achieve high performance in the production of neutrons. The building is constructed from reinforced concrete; it is seismically qualified and has a metallic grillage for protection from a light aircraft crash.
