A ‘wheat equivalent tonne’ is a measurement defined under the Food Aid
Convention. It is used by the international donor community to compare the
value of food assistance provided, ensuring a standard value of contributions,
irrespective of the market price of various goods. For instance, if rice is
cheaper than wheat, more rice would need to be provided to make up a donor’s
annual pledge.
